Google's New Sodar Tool Helps Android Smartphone Users Maintain Social Distancing

Sodar works through Google-made Chrome browsers on Android smartphones that support augmented reality.

Smartphone users have a new way to keep their distance — a tool that lets them know when people are getting closer than pandemic guidelines recommend.

The Google-developed Sodar tool available this week taps into Android smartphone cameras to put users in the centre of a white circle with a radius of about two meters, or 6.5 feet.

The perimeter, determined based on pandemic social distancing guidelines, is made using the same kind of augmented reality technology in smartphone games such as Pokemon Go.

Circles superimposed on surroundings move with users, keeping smartphones in the centre. Users get a visual warning when they are within the potentially hazardous radius.

Sodar works through Google-made Chrome browsers on Android smartphones that support augmented reality, according to the California-based internet firm.

"This experiment uses (the application program interface) WebXR to visualise 2-metre social-distancing guidelines in your environment," a message at the website said.

PUBG "Addicted" Minors Steal 20 Mobiles In Delhi To Play With Friends: Cops

The owner of the shop filed a complaint with police on Friday and alleged that 20 mobile phones, 30 mobile batteries, Ludo and Chess sets have been stolen from his shop.

Two minors were today apprehended in Delhi after they allegedly broke into a shop and stole 20 smartphones to play online game PUBG (PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds) with their friends, police said.

The minors' phones were malfunctioning and they also wanted their friends to join, police said.

The incident took place on the intervening night of 28th-29th May in South Delhi's Naibsarai area.

The owner of the shop filed a complaint with police on Friday and alleged that 20 mobile phones, 30 mobile batteries, Ludo and Chess sets have been stolen from his shop.

The police detained the two minors today and recovered all the stolen goods.

During the interrogation, the two minors said that they are addicted to PUBG and wanted to include some of their friends in the game too, police said.

They told police that there are certain tasks in PUBG that can only be attempted when a group of gamers play together.

There have been many incidents in the past when PUBG addiction has led minors to commit crime.

In October last year, a 16-year-old boy had allegedly faked his own kidnapping and sought ransom from his parents after they took away his mobile phone in Hyderabad.

The boy had left for Mumbai.

During his journey, he called his mother from a passenger's phone and called his mother. Impersonating another man, he told her that "her son" had been kidnapped and demanded Rs 3 lakh as ransom.

In February last year, an 18-year-old youth allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself after he had an argument with his family members over buying a new mobile phone for PUBG.

Google's Play Store has a few different negative associations, even among Android users, depending on who you talk to. Some developers find they don't get enough support from the company when they run into issues, and less savvy customers have to wade through piles of low-effort and low-quality app clones loaded with ads at best, and malware at worst. But pretty much everyone can agree that the Play Store app itself could be better. While the experience varies, switching between sections, updating apps, and even just scrolling can be a janky, stuttery experience, even on the fastest smartphones.

The overall Play Store performance experience is different based on your account and hardware, but here's a particularly egregious example of performance problems from Android Police's Artem Russakovski and his Pixel 4 XL:

Play Store jank while updating can even interfere with the home navigation gesture — not a great experience.

There are plenty of possible explanations for performance problems in the Play Store. After all, the app is doing a lot of things pretty much all the time: Populating and sorting massive lists, pulling down graphics and other content for each, and downloading updates. That's a lot for an app to handle all at once. But even if you're doing just one or two of these things at a time — like scrolling through lists or simply moving to a different section of the app in the slide-out navigation menu, when it's seemingly doing nothing — it still stutters.

Even a super-smooth 120Hz phone with the latest, fastest Snapdragon 865 will see more frame drops, freezes, and jank in the Play Store than in most other apps. Humorously, our friends at XDA Developers even include Play Store scrolling performance as part of their reviews — the Play Store's anecdotal performance so consistently poor, it's a standard the site's more technically minded readers can easily recognize as a baseline for device comparison.

While the severity of Play Store jank varies anecdotally, it does seem to be a common problem. For some, it's a long-standing issue, but others are seeing performance worsen more recently. I personally can't remember a time that I didn't experience dropped frames, stutters, and at least minor system UI freezes from the app, dating back across dozens of devices to at least the Jelly Bean/ICS era. Even if the stutters and lag are usually manageable, the Play Store is rarely a fluid experience.

Over the last month, we've reached out to Google several times for more information about precisely how or why the Play Store app suffers these sorts of performance problems. While we're told it's being looked into, detailed information wasn't forthcoming.

WhatsApp Scam Alert: Scammers Pose as ‘WhatsApp Technical Team’ to Steal Verification Codes

Scammers ask users on WhatsApp to verify their identity by providing their six-digit verification code.

A new WhatsApp scam has emerged in which an account that pretends as an official communication source for WhatsApp technical team asks users to share their verification code. The account uses a WhatsApp logo as its profile picture to convince users.

However, it is important to highlight that WhatsApp teams don't use the messaging app to communicate with users and instead use social media channels, including Twitter or the company's official blog to send public announcements.

WhatsApp features tracker WABetaInfo posted a tweet to highlight the latest scam after a Twitter user Dario Navarro enquired about a fishy message that the users had received.

As per a screenshot shared by Navarro, the scammer sends a message in Spanish asking users to verify their identity by providing their six-digit verification code that comes via an SMS message.

The verification code is used to activate a WhatsApp account on a new device. It is aimed to protect user accounts on the messaging app from bad actors.

Since the scammer uses the WhatsApp logo as the profile picture for the account in question, unaware users may fall for it. However, as noted by the WaBetaInfo, WhatsApp doesn't message users on the app, and if it would in a rare circumstance, a green verified indicator will be visible alongside the logo and the account name. It is also important to note that the Facebook-owned company doesn't ask users to provide any of their data, including verification codes.

Therefore, the message seen in the screenshot is nothing but a scam to gain account access. You should not pay attention to any such messages.

WhatsApp has clearly mentioned that users are advised to not share the SMS verification code with others on its website. “If someone is trying to take over your account, they need the SMS verification code sent to your phone number to do so. Without this code, any user attempting to verify your number can't complete the verification process and use your phone number on WhatsApp,” the company wrote in its FAQs section.
